THE SLWGA

OUR FOUNDER

The St. Louis Women's Golf Association began in the mind of its founder, Pam Rothfuss Whalen, in 1975. With a background in competitive golf in the state of Ohio, Pam realized that the St. Louis metropolitan area lacked a public golf organization for the woman golfer. And so the quest for a women's public golf association began.

With the help of volunteer women golfers in the greater St. Louis area, an open invitational tournament was organized and scheduled which would prove to be the impetus in forming the SLWGA. The tournament, held in the fall of 1976, was a huge success. Those same devoted workers began the formalization of an organization that became known as the St Louis Women's Golf Association (SLWGA).

In January of 1977 the SLWGA, armed with an Executive Committee of ten women, a constitution and a dream, began to beat the bushes, the rough and the greater St. Louis area for all public course women golfers. Golf courses in the metropolitan St. Louis area began to recognize the SLWGA: doors to many courses were open for women and the game was on. Talented women golfers began to compete on a level playing field and the competition was governed by the USGA Rules of Golf; to the present day, the association continues to monitor golf events for both pace of play and the rules of golf. Our membership now competes in state wide and national competitions with confidence in not only their golf ability but also in their knowledge of the rules of golf.

In recognition of her many contributions to women's golf in the greater St. Louis area, Pam Rothfuss Whalen has been named an Honorary Life Member of the SLWGA. View the SLWGA historical records by clicking on THE SLWGA LINK above.

WHAT

The St. Louis Women's Golf Association (SLWGA) is an amateur women's golf association that conducts both fun and competitive golf events on golf courses in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

Our members have current USGA GHIN handicaps which allow us to organize our events on a level playing field but keeps the element of fun in each event. We schedule a Match Play or a Medal Play Championship each year that may result in three days of play. We also have four-ball stroke play competitions each month in which club members compete against the course, fielding 4 teams of two players from May thru September. The lowest stroke total team is the annual SLWGA Team Champion.

Our events are played in both Illinois and Missouri, on private and public golf courses. We select events that will mix and mingle our membership to encourage our members to meet new friends, renew old friendships and enjoy the fun in playing golf.

The button links that you see above Home, Tournament, Team, Bulletins, The SLWGA and Contacts/Links contain information pertinent to that category. Click to view.

The SLWGA events for the current golf season are listed on the Tournament page. The team events are listed on the Team page. The Bulletins page will be updated with annoucements that are interesting or pertain to our family of members.  The SLWGA page contains our history. Past history of our winners, the whos and whens and happenings are there for all to see.

If you have need to communicate with one of our board members about golf, remarks about tournaments, etc., please feel free to go to the Contacts/Links page.  Let us hear from you. We do appreciate all input from our members and we do try to make changes that will please our membership. The SLWGA goal is to promote golf!
